Easter time in Samos

We went into town this morning to celebrate Greek Independence Day celebrating the declaration of the Independence War against the Ottomans on March 25th, 1821. Apart from a national celebration, this day is also a religious celebration dedicated to the Annunciation of Virgin Mary.

Spot Tara?

Not sure im looking forward to the main mast!!!!

We've finished most of the winter jobs on the boat now with just the rigging and masts to refurbish....
The Navy ship took our mooring so time to move again!

Kerveli - another winter gem!

Kerveli! What another beautiful winter bay we found on the south east coast of Samos.

We walked up the steep hills around the bay which were covered in trees, olive groves and beautiful gardens
Across the sea, the coast of Turkey was visible as a colourful stripe of lights twinkling along its coastline and the port of Kusadasi. A definite Turkey destination for the summer months!

Fitted the passarelle ready for our new stern mooring...

Think these are Cyprus trees!

Spring is on the door step - 27/2/2016

Happy days!

The real world!

More than 90,000 refugees and migrants have arrived on Samos this year as they flee war and destitution. It is three times as many people as those who live on this sleepy eastern Aegean island, which has been thrust into the frontline of global events. An informal network of local officials, volunteers and NGO workers has been created to support the arrivals, who often have a tragic story to tell but are always hoping that Samos represents the start of a better life.

A small child’s shoe! These are among the items strewn across Kalima beach on the eastern Aegean island of Samos on a sunny February day.

'Christina' in the distance

Gulf of Kuşadası - becoming our regular winter cruising ground.

This is the detritus of the largest influx of refugees and migrants from the nearby Turkish coast that this island of less than 33,000 inhabitants has seen since the Asia Minor Greeks fled the onslaught of Turkish troops almost a century earlier.

More than 90,000 people, mostly Syrian refugees, have arrived on Samos by sea this year. This is much lower than the main Aegean gateway of Lesvos, which almost half a million people out more than 800,000 have reached in 2015, but is still several times higher than last year’s arrivals and makes Samos the third most popular of some 15 islands that have become stepping stones for refugees and migrants on their way to Central and Northern Europe, where they hope to find security and prosperity. Until they can make that onward journey, Samos will provide their first taste of the European Union for thousands of desperate people. It is here that they will be at the mercy of overburdened authorities, the vagaries of the asylum process and the kindness of strangers.

So much lovely wood on this boat hidden away...
Friday 29th January / 8am.... cant be bad!
The cold snap has gone and we should be back upto 16 Deg next week which sounds weird if your use to living in the UK! The cold snap was a real reminder that life on an old wooden boat isn't for everyone. Wind chill of -2 some nights. We had both electric fires on full blast in the cabins and had to block up any unwanted holes! Blankets over the knees in the evenings! Its interesting cycling to the shower block only to find someone's used all the hot water! - yep- living the dream!  Tara's always wanted to sort out the heads! (bathroom). It had never really been 'finished off' by the Turkish boat-builders. Its a small space so we've decided to 'gut it' and start again. We've been out and about to find new taps and a shower mixer, plus we found a 'stand alone' porcelain bowl ( You know, the ones like in those posh houses), but this is a mini version and looks great. Just what you might have seen on an old boat back in the 1940's. Were fitting perspex panels today and painting. Things are warming up tomorrow, so we will then crack on with the remaining jobs outside. Times flying .... March can be hot here and we have plenty of exploring to do this summer, so we will both be very busy for the next 6 weeks finishing everything off.
